European Judo Union fails to see benefits of UFC partnership

I was particularly disappointed to learn that the European Judo Union (EJU) has taken the decision to cancel their European Championships event, which was to be held in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena this coming April, purely because it was to be sponsored by the UFC.  The British Judo Association (BJA) had agreed a landmark sponsorship deal with the world’s premier mixed martial arts company, a very fitting partnership you would think,

Best of 2014 series: Top 10 MMA Freak Articles of 2014

It’s taken a while to get this series going but it’s finally the time to do so. As with last year this year the contributors for the site of the past year will be honored. Any article written in 2014 is eligible and of course not all the nominated articles made it so here’s the honorable mentions: Honorable Mentions: -Monthly  Rankings – by Matthew Salzer. Performance enhancing but career diminishing; PED abuse is killing MMA.

When I sat down to write this article the plan was to express my disappointment with the performance (inside the Octagon) of both Nick Diaz and, in particular, Anderson Silva at UFC 183. However, it was the subsequent news that both Anderson and Nick failed pre fight drug tests that has disappointed me more. Diaz and his apparent marijuana problem is only a side issue to this whole story, after

Best of 2014 series: Top 10 MMA upsets of the year

2014 was an interesting year when it came to upsets. While the greatest of all time was not upset, there was certainly an upset this year that was comparable. Looking back things could have gone a completely different way. Please note that TUF exhibition matches are eligible for this category. Again these matches were voted on by the writers here at MMA Freak and because of the varied opinions, there

Top 10 fights of December 2014

It was the last month of the year and to say that the sport went out with a bang is an understatement. With that here’s the best of December: 10) The Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned – Rose Namajunas vs. Randa Markos This was the last fight in the house and as with all the others it didn’t disappoint. Both rising prospects, Randa Markos had proven to be the dark

The UFC: it all started in Scotland

Back in September 2014 I posted an article on here that the UFC would be coming to Scotland this year following Dana White’s response to a tweet I sent.  The news that the UFC may finally be coming to Scottish shores quickly spread far and wide as the excitement amongst Scottish fight fans hit fever pitch. Some 5 months later the same article is still sitting firmly top of MMA-Freak’s

Jon Jones tests positive for cocaine.

Only a few days after defending his Light heavyweight belt against Daniel Cormier at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, it has been confirmed that the best pound for pound fighter on the plant Jon ‘bones’ Jones has tested positive for cocaine.  The results of a random drug test carried out by the Nevada Athletic Commission showed traces of benzoylecgonine, which is the main metabolite in cocaine.  However, Jones was still

Are MMA athletes being CM Punked?

It’s not often I agree with any of the Diaz brothers but I fully support Nate’s opinion on the UFC’s decision to sign former WWE star CM Punk.  In an interview with Ariel Helwani ahead of his recent fight with Rafael Dos Anjos Nate was very passionate in his response about the fact the UFC are basically giving an amateur fighter a chance to compete in the world’s premier MMA

New Years special: Top 10 MMA New Years resolutions to make for 2015

With the new year comes many new years resolutions. As is tradition, here are ten New Years Resolutions that the MMA world should make: 10) Someone should hire Bjorn Rebney It was no secret that Bellator MMA creator Bjorn Rebney and Bellator’s parent company Viacom were butting heads for quite a while. Both sides had different ideas of where they wanted the company to go and were able to work together. However,
