Matt “Meathead” Mitrione has been the talk around the water cooler since his interview yesterday. In a Monday appearance on “The MMA Hour,” Mitrione called transgender fighter Fallen Fox a “lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak.”

Three days after his 19-second knockout win over Philip De Fries, the UFC heavyweight has been suspended for speaking his mind. In response, the UFC issued a statement saying the “TUF 10″ veteran’s contract has been suspended and he will be investigated.

“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on ‘The MMA Hour,” the statement read. “The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”

In the interview, Mitrione  referred to Fox as “he” and “him” and said he was “appalled” by Fox fighting other women.

“It’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that,” Mitrione said. “The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”

Since SI.com reported that Fallen Fox, 37, had gender reassignment surgery in 2006 along with supplemental hormonal therapy, “she” has been the talk in the MMA world. Fox holds a 5-0 combined record as a professional and amateur fighter with all five wins coming in the first round. The major controversy has been centered around her being built like a man (fists, jaw, etc.) and her fighting women.

If she has been cleared and if women are expecting the fights with her, I don’t see what the big deal is? I don’t agree with it, but talking about it is getting people no where, and in Mitrione’s case, it got him suspended. I feel that this is a case of freedom of speech, but we all should know by now that the UFC doesn’t abide by that amendment.

Look at what they did to Miguel Torres a couple years ago. He made a little joke (a joke from a TV show) and was released. Granted he was eventually brought back, but still.

Mitrione will more than likely see himself back in the UFC’s octagon, but only time will tell. The big question is, when will Fallen Fox not be a story anymore? If she wins, “she is a man that beat a woman,” and if she loses, then the woman that beats her is a “man beater.”

~ Final Thought ~

This whole thing is being blown out of proportion. Transgender fighters shouldn’t be able to fight, and freedom of speech needs to be a thing everywhere in my opinion. MMA-Freak discussed Fallon Fox on our latest episode of Kitten’s Corner.

Joe Rogan can voice his opinion and be very vulgar, but when a fighter (Mitrione) speaks his mind, he is suspended? Everybody loves freedom of speech until they use it. I feel Mitrione should be able to speak his mind, and the fact that Fox isn’t affiliated with the UFC, shouldn’t have got Mitrione suspended in my opinion.
