Mohegan Sun Casino in CT was the host of today’s weigh- in for Bellator MMA event on September 7, 2013.
The event features a Bellator middleweight title fight between reigning champion Alexander Shlemenko (47 – 7), who will defend the title he won back on February 7, 2013 against Brett Cooper (19-8).
Doug Marshall (Season Eight Tournament Winner) was forced out of this fight due to injury, which then set up for the Bellator officials to use and utilize the newly enforced “replacement clause.” This gave Brett Cooper the chance to jump into the title fight against Shlemenko.
Along with the title fight, the opening rounds of the new middleweight tournament will begin to crown a new number one contender.
Shlemenko comes into this fight carrying a lot of momentum, while riding a 10 fight winning streak. This will be the second time he has squared off with Cooper as well. Shlemenko defeated his advisory by decision at Bellator 44.
Cooper has made some ground since the original meeting with the Russian middleweight. Before coming short against Doug Marshall, Cooper was also on a decent run of his own. Now having gone 7-1 in his last 8 fights, Cooper looks to redeem his loss and possibly create a trilogy scenario.
