The UFC has a lot of enemies these days. Most of them are jealous because of their success, and secretly upset that they weren’t able to cash in on the MMA world’s largest promotion when they were given the chance.
Some of these people who can’t become a part of something beautiful, would rather destroy it than watch it grow, choose to attack the UFC and the few negative issues that surround the organization.
The UFC isn’t perfect, and in the spirit of fair play, it probably has done some unethical things. But those listed below, are currently throwing as many stones at the young promotion as possible. They need to look at their past decisions, and ask themselves if they really have any room to talk.
~ #1 ESPN ~
Where ESPN barely pays their boxers, they criticize the UFC who pay their fighters much more. Where ESPN makes up statistics to corroborate their false claims, they go even further to call the UFC brass liars and hypocrites.
This is very telling of the kind of organization ESPN must really be. If they are capable of spinning the truth to the extent they have in the MMA world, what type of ethical coverage can we hope for in the other top five sports they report on?
The UFC partnering with FOX must have been hard for ESPN, driving them to attempt at discrediting the UFC.
~ #2 Boxing promoters ~
Boxing promoters are the biggest hypocrites in the world. For more than a century they have been doing exactly what they claim the UFC has done to its fighters. Cheating, stealing, and everything else that has led to the down fall of the greatest combat sport of the 20th century.
Lou Dibella comes to mind as one of the biggest douche bags in recent times. But don’t forget about Don King who screwed over some of the biggest legends and superstars, dating way back to the 1970’s.
Mike Tyson assaulted King at one point, and in all honesty, he was completely justified in trying to take the man’s head off. Google it and decide for yourself.
~ #3 The media ~
The media fancies the idea that if Dana White and the UFC disclosed the exact amount they paid each fighter, plus how much the promotion brings in for each event, that it would lead to a lot of questions answered.
The reality is that they wouldn’t be satisfied with the truth, they would just find more ammunition and more plot points to pursue. Like White’s stated in past interviews, if the media wants to know how much fighters make, they can ask them.
Instead of going after the big bad organization that’s responsible for creating 19 millionaires (ESPN interview), they would start pointing fingers at fighters who made more than those that make much less.
Let’s focus on the fighting, and let the business model that has worked thus far, continue to make fighters in to super stars.
~ #4 Disgruntled former employees ~
Former employees are never going to talk kindly about the company who doesn’t value their efforts any longer. Most people have been fired or let go at some point in their life. The rest, are simply too young to have had that experience yet.
It shouldn’t shock anyone that fighters like Jacob Volkmann, War Machine, or Jon Fitch complain about the UFC. It’s important to listen to what they say on the issue since I’m sure they have a few valid points, but even more important to look at their situation and consider the strong possibility their perspectives are heavily biased towards their specific situations.
Consider every single pioneer of the sport who, for one reason or another, were unable to make money when they were fighting when the sport was young and un-established, too when many have transitioned in to other roles surrounding the sport since then.
Fighters like Frank Shamrock, Don Frye, and Tito Ortiz, seem to lash out at the UFC at times for mistakes they made, not their employers at the time.
~ #5 Dear readers ~
It’s hard for all of us to look past the face value of words that are conveyed on mediums we have learned to respect. Lately, any idiot can create a twitter account, a blog, or podcast, and make some seriously delusional ignorant and uninformed statements.
Even when they have credentials as powerful as ESPN, don’t ever stop pondering the issue and searching for the truth. Be truth seekers and remember the antithesis of the golden rule, “haters gonna hate.”
