As an MMA wrestler, the only tool you have to help you excel in your field is your body. There are no equipment, no gadgets, no machines to help you. When out there in the ring, it’s just you, your body, and your will to win. This makes it imperative that you take care of your body in every way possible. You have a stringent exercise routine and extensive training to follow. Your every move in the practice focuses towards one thing: pinning down your opponent.
Nevertheless, there is something else too that is as important as your training schedule- your diet. What goes in your body can drastically affect the way you perform. All the professional fighters have special diets charts devised especially for them. A wrestler’s diet schedule is of crucial importance for it can severely alter their level of performance and the ability to undergo rigorous training.

~ Five mistakes an MMA wrestler should avoid ~

Indulging in non-healthy foods- If you have made up your mind to enter professional MMA, the first thing that you need to do is to say goodbye to all types of junk foods. Think of in this way: if it’s going in your body and not giving you any nutritional value, it can endanger your career. Again, remember that your body is your only weapon as a wrestler and it’s best to not fill it with waste.

Not getting enough proteins- As a wrestler, you rely on your muscular power. What helps you get those muscles? It’s protein. Only if you get the requisite amount of proteins you can think about having a body well built enough for wrestling. Include lean proteins and low glycemic carbohydrates in your diet. Choose good quality protein shakes, which definitely should not contain any kind of steroids. Be wise in choosing your proteins.

Forgetting about vitamins and minerals- At the same time while fulfilling the requirements of proteins, it would be drastic to forget about the vital minerals and vitamins. You require more of iron and calcium than an average person, make sure you eat enough of them. Your bones have to be a strong as your muscles to enable you to perform optimally. Include fresh fibrous fruits and vegetables in your diet and it’s best not to overcook them.

Not keeping the body sufficiently hydrated- Ideally, you should intake at least a gallon of water per day. During your training, you sweat a lot. This leads to loss of water and mineral content from your body, which you have to make up. One of the best options that you have is to have a mix of Gatorade and water during the training. A mix is suggested as opposed to pure Gatorade as Gatorade may successfully replenish the lost glycogens but does not rehydrate the body, hence the mix with water.

Eating at wrong times- When you eat is as important as what you eat, especially if you are an MMA athlete. Before going for the training, you can have your fill of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give you energy and you require energy during the training session. However, make sure that there is a gap of at least two hours between your carb-fix and the training session. For your dinner, you can concentrate on the proteins and other food groups. Having enough water during the training is of crucial importance.
