“I told you guys it was just a matter of time before my hands got power in them,” Askren said after his 3rd round TKO (doctor’s stoppage) over Karl Amoussou. Ben Askren is known by a lot of fans as being a “lay and prey” fighter, but I have never considered the Bellator welterweight champion in that category.
He is one of the most dominate wrestlers I have ever witnessed in the sport of MMA. Even Askren haters were impressed watching him destroy Amoussou, especially after all of Amoussou’s talk. Askren talks the talk and walks the walk. If he says he will break you, then he will do just that, and he isn’t scared of anybody at 170.
“If you’re a welterweight, anywhere in the world, you better watch out, I’m coming,” Askren said after his win.
The problem I have with fighters/fans now a days is, the new breed is on a whole other level and they need to quit being compared to former stars from back in the day. I had multiple fans ask me if I think Askren is the Tito Ortiz of Bellator?
To answer all my fans, no I don’t think that. I have never seen a dominate wrestling game and a fighter who fights inside the guard as well as Askren besides Ortiz, but Askren is the new Askren, not the new Tito.
~Final Thought~
I consider Askren in the top 5 welterweights in the world. With his dominate wrestling and improved striking, he should be UFC bound by 2014. He is a humble supportive guy, so I see him staying with the company that made him, but we all know when the UFC comes calling, you would be stupid not to accept, and Askren isn’t dumb.
