In February it’s going to be a great weekend with the Super Bowl and and a packed card of fights.
UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar
- Date: February 2, 2013
- Time: 10pm ET/7pm PT
- Location: Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
UFC 156 card is set with the Main Event where Jose Aldo (21-1 mma) is set to defend his featherweight title against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 mma). Also set to square off in the co-main event is the return of “The Demolition Man” as Alistair Overeem (36-11 mma) takes on Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (17-4 mma).
One of the biggest fights on the card has to be the match-up between Jon Fitch and Demian Maia. It will be a battle of two of the best grapplers at 170 lbs., and in a recent interview with ESPN.com, Fitch gave some early thoughts on how he thinks that fight will pan out. “It will be an interesting matchup,” Fitch said. “I haven’t created too much of a game plan, but I think I’ll overwhelm him with everything that I bring to the table.”
Fitch is known for being very dominate on the ground, but also known as a fighter who is very familiar with preforming the “lay and pray”. However, Maia presents unique problems as well, as one of the larger fighters in the division after dropping down from middleweight.
“He’s really a monster at 170,” Fitch said. “I was surprised at how big he was down in Rio [at UFC 153].”
Fitch is looking at getting back to the top of the division and receiving another title shot at 170. Before he can do that, he will be put to the true test facing a true tactioner in Maia who will put Fitch to the test, and maybe even negate the ground game turning this fight into a stand up war.
