UFC on Fox 8, July 27 at Seattle’s KeyArena, was looking for a main event, and now they have one with the flyweight title on the line. Current champion Demetrious Johnson (5-1-1 UFC, 17-2-1 MMA) will defend his championship against top contender John Moraga (2-0 UFC, 12-1 MMA). This fight was initially supposed to take place at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale earlier this month, but a shoulder injury put Johnson on the shelf.
“Mighty Mouse” is recently coming off a unanimous win against TUF winner John Dodson at UFC on FOX 6. On the other hand, Moraga is receiving a title shot coming off two straight UFC wins.
He debuted this past August with a first-round TKO of Ulysses Gomez. He then followed up with a third-round submission of Chris Cariaso at UFC 155 in a fight he was losing.
Additionally, a women’s bout between former UFC title challenger Liz Carmouche (0-1 UFC, 8-3 MMA) and former Strikeforce woman’s champion Miesha Tate (0-1 UFC, 13-4 MMA), has been added to the event and will take place on the evening’s main card.
Both fighters are coming off losses and will be looking to rejoin the winning column. Tate recently lost a 3rd round TKO to undefeated Cat Zingano after dominating the first two rounds at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale.
The fight was no joke and earned the FOTN honors. Meanwhile, Carmouche is coming off the biggest loss of her career, losing a close fight to UFC woman’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Both fighters will be looking to earn their first UFC victory.
Another big fight added to the card involves a certain fighter who was suspended recently. Matt Mitrione‘s suspension for his trans-phobic comments directed toward transgender fighter Fallon Fox, has been lifted after only 16 days.
Not only was Mitrione’s suspension ludicrous in my eyes, but it wasn’t even worth it. I’m not go to ground my child for washing my car with rocks for 2 days, then go get him ice cream.
This whole thing makes no sense. Mitrione gets suspended for less than a month, and now already has his next fight. UFC officials announced Wednesday night that Mitrione will meet fellow Ultimate Fighter 10 alum Brendan Schaub.
“I’m not mad at Mitrione,” Dana White said this past weekend. “He did something stupid. He knows he did something stupid. He knows the way he said it, he didn’t handle it the right way. He knows he did, so I can respect that.”
